SMALL KINDNESSES (by Danusah Laméris)

I’ve been thinking about the way, when you walk down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs to let you by. Or how strangers still say “bless you” when someone sneezes, a leftover from the Bubonic plague. “Don’t die,” we are saying. And sometimes, when you spill lemons from your grocery bag, someone else will help you pick them up. Mostly, we don’t want to harm each other. We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot, and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder, and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass. We have so little of each other, now. So far from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange. What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these fleeting temples we make together when we say, “Here, have my seat,” “Go ahead — you first,” “I like your hat.”

The Professional Athletes Who Swear By Yoga

There are many benefits of yoga that are well known, increasing balance and flexibility for example, and there are more people taking it up than ever before. Research conducted by Disturb Me Not shows that participants have increased across the U.S. by over 50% in the last four years. However, it may be surprising to note that a rising number of professional athletes are all utilizing yoga to strengthen their abilities. Yoga can provide physical and mental aids to enhance performance, allowing them to be more aware of their bodies. It was vital to former U.S. Olympic and Women’s Grand Tour cycling winner, Mara Abbott who said: “If you want to achieve whatever your highest level of potential in sport is, you need to have that relationship with your body.”

Below we’ve compiled a list of four of the best current athletes who practice yoga as a way of benefitting them in their professional life.

Michelle Wie West

The LPGA tour player who famously turned pro golfer at the age of just 16 loves yoga. She says it’s important to listen to her body when preparing for time on the course and even more so now as Wie West has recently had her first child. She says that yoga is the perfect method for her to feel refreshed and ready for anything, giving her a calming sensation allowing her to let things happen the way they should.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese player is one of the most famous soccer players on the planet and sees the practice as vital in his pre-match preparation. He is well known for his mental strength, and Ronaldo might need that edge, as his Manchester United team are currently outsiders in the latest Premier League odds from Coral. A former teammate of his, Ryan Giggs attributed yoga as the main reason he could maintain the fitness needed to play for the Red Devils until the age of 40. With Ronaldo now aged 36, it may mean that due to yoga, fans may well see him in the Premier League for quite a while yet too.

Blake Griffin

The current Brooklyn Nets power forward has long advocated for yoga as the ideal thing to enhance his on-court performance. Griffin, 32, has worked with Kent Katich, who is the person that many NBA players go to for routines and best practices for yoga. Griffin has three sessions a week to help keep in the best of shape, and he says the benefits are that it keeps his muscles loose so he can function at his highest level. With the Nets starting the season brightly, Griffin will undoubtedly benefit from his extra-curricular activity well into the postseason should they get there.

Tom Brady

Arguably the greatest ever player to grace the game of football, Tom Brady, loves the positive effects that yoga has brought to his game. Brady is the perfect example of someone who has the perfect ‘Attitude, Belief and Determination’ to succeed. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback said that ‘it’s great for flexibility, it’s therapeutic and great for your attitude.’ With seven Super Bowl rings to his name and a career spanning over twenty years, it’s hard to argue against his point.

Getting Good Sleep

You know that feeling when you really want to sleep…but can’t? You’re not alone. One in three of us have sleep issues and getting good rest is not always easy. Read on for our favorite tips!

Did you know one in three of us have sleep challenges? Not only does a bad night's rest make you feel not your best but it also can have long-term impacts. The CDC has declared our sleep issues a “public health epidemic” linked to a range of medical and mental health issues.

The good news is that practicing yoga can help manage symptoms of insomnia including getting you to fall asleep more quickly, sleep longer and..go back to sleep after waking up at night.

We intentionally schedule our slower flow & restorative classes later in the evening to help your body & mind get ready for rest. Flow Members - you get some extra perks like our evening wind downs and yoga nidra sessions too!

There are so many great sleep tips to help you get good rest - join the discussion over on instagram - we'd love to hear your best ways to get a good night's sleep.

I'll also leave you with one of my all time favorites- a good eye pillow. I use one each and every night and consider myself a connoisseur ;). While my absolute favorite one by barefoot yoga is no longer being produced, here are two that I love:

This one's super soft & lightweight with a great price.

And for those of you who love weighted blankets, you have to try out a weighted eye pillow! It's sold out right now but you can add it to your cart for when it's back in stock.

We also love:

➡️ Lavender and Chamomile (via tea or aromatherapy)

➡️ Journalling to get all of the thoughts & to-dos out of your head

➡️ A consistent wake and sleep time

➡️ A steady bedtime routine - for example - (bath, tea, reading/journaling, lights out

➡️ Putting your phone to bed at least 1/2 hour before you begin your evening routine

➡️ Eye Pillows (see comments for our favorites!!)

➡️ Melatonin @ollywellness sleep gummies

➡️ keeping room to a cooler temp vs. too hot

➡️ Yoga Nidra (Flow's Friday night with @finding_flow_dc is a great one!)

➡️ Restorative Yoga poses (forward folds, legs up the wall...)

➡️ @smilingmind awesome & free mindfulness app
