Experience the Difference

Mysore Yoga is different from many other yoga classes you’ve taken. Here’s why:

  1. It is self led. Students are active in the learning process through autonomous practice, repetition, and daily individualized feedback in a group setting.

  2. It is a set sequence. Each student begins by learning Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series (one pose at a time) made up of:

    • Sun Salutations

    • Standing Poses

    • Seated Poses

    • Backbends

    • Closing

  3. It is self paced. All students will move at their own pace. You are welcome to arrive ANYTIME between 10:00am 12:00pm as long as you are finished by 12pm. Most students practice for an hour.

  4. It is practiced in silence. Well, not really, but here’s what we mean: Mysore yoga invites you to tune inwards and move to the sound of your own breath, the rhythm of your movements gradually become coherent and aligned with the movements of your body. Unlike led classes, in which the teacher begins the class and leads all students through synchronized movements for a set amount of time, Mysore yoga does not.

    • The teacher will not guide the entire class at the same time, nor tell you what to do the entire time. Instead, you get to build and remember your practice through repetition.

    • Unlike led classes that use music and amazing playlists, Mysore yoga does not. Instead, you will be guided to listen to the sound of your breath. Your breath is the music.

  5. It is an ALL LEVELS practice. You are likely to walk into the room and witness a group of students all practicing with different intensities, different poses, and different bodies. This is a GOOD thing. Diversity is acknowledged, welcomed, and celebrated as a necessary and obvious ingredient in life, our bodies, and ultimately, our progress. We all have work and that work looks and feels different for each one of us; our physical practice is no different.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • a. Mysore is a city in South India. This is where the practice originates

from and many Ashtanga Yoga Teachers travel to learn, study, and practice traditional Ashtanga Yoga in community.

    b. Mysore Yoga at Flow Yoga Center applies the ancient teaching methodologies used in Mysore India to help each individual develop a daily practice tailored to their needs. Individualized attention means Mysore Yoga is vastly different from any other class you’ve ever taken. Here’s why:

    i. Mysore is a self led practice made up of 6 series. Each series is increasingly more complex, demanding, and specific.

    1. Every student begins day 1 by learning, practicing, and repeating Sun Salutations of Primary Series and gradually builds their practice (one pose at a time) from there. Please plan to practice for 25-35 minutes your first couple of days. Gradually your practice will become longer.

    2. Your teacher, Jarrick, opens the doors at 9:50am and begins teaching and adjusting from 10am - 12pm.

    3. Because Mysore is a self paced practice, you are welcome to arrive ANYTIME between 10am- 12pm. As long as you are finished by 12pm.

    a. You will notice some students arrive extra early to practice and head out to tend to their responsibilities, other students arrive later and take longer to move through their practice. It doesn’t really matter as long as you give yourself time to practice and be done by 12pm. Most students practice for an hour.

    b. Think of it as Open Practice from 10am-12pm. Jarrick is available to assist you as you need throughout that time. The time you arrive and leave is up to you.

ii. Mysore is a structured practice

    1. Each student is learning a set sequence (one pose at a time) made up of:

    a. Sun Salutations

    b. Standing Poses

    c. Seated Poses

    d. Backbends

    e. Closing

    2. Each student is taught a traditional Vinyasa count

    a. Vinyasa means breath in movement; or conscious movement

    b. Just like music, dance, and any rhythmic art, Ashtanga Yoga teaches us the power of synchronizing our breath with our movement. We learn to set the beat, the tone, the rhythm of our practice to the sweet melodic rhythm of our breath

    c. Each student will learn to move consciously with their breath

    3. Each student is progressing at their own pace

    a. Once a student has learned basic form and sequence, the student may discover that a specific seated pose is not as accessible as the previous one. When this happens, the student breathes with it, pauses there, and then acknowledges there is work to be done here both internally and externally. The student will then practice up to this pose daily.

    b. Gradually, with time, patience, and intelligent aligned effort, the student may discover that the pose that was once inaccessible (or at least perceived to be so) is now available. At which point, the teacher then adds another pose, and on and on the learning process continues.

    c. Each student has their own learning process and insights. Some students may physically move more quickly than you, others may be more forgetful, others you may not even notice at all. It’s all about you and your process.

    d. **Mysore yoga becomes a lot more fun when we do not compare ourselves to others and really just focus on learning how to apply the practices of yoga to best serve us so we may live more consciously and receptively.**

iii. Mysore is a quiet practice

    1. Well, not really, but here’s what I mean:

    a. Unlike led classes, in which the teacher begins the class and leads all students through synchronized movements for a set amount of time, Mysore yoga does not.

    i. Jarrick will not guide the entire class as one group

ii. Jarrick will not tell you what to do the entire time, you get to remember through repetition

    b. Unlike led classes that use music and amazing playlists, Mysore yoga does not

    i. You will be guided to listen to the sound of your breath

ii. Your breath is the music

    2. Mysore yoga invites you to tune inwards and move to the sound of your own breath, the rhythm of your movements gradually becoming coherent and aligned with the movements of your body

    3. You are likely to walk into the room and witness a group of students all practicing with different intensities, different poses, and different bodies. This is a GOOD thing. Diversity is acknowledged, welcome, and celebrated as a necessary and obvious ingredient in life, in bodies, in our progress. We all have work and that work looks and feels different for each one of us; our physical practice is no different.

    4. The common denominator for all practicing: All are moving to The Sound of their own Breath
