Almost daily I get questions about how things work in the Mysore room — where we practice daily the Ashtanga Vinyasa method of yoga. There are many misperceptions and quite a bit of false information out there in the yoga world about this practice, so I thought I’d try and provide some clarity.
Savasana– Take Rest!
“each time we rest in śavāsana at the end of our practice is an opportunity to let go of some aspect of ourselves (hala hala – the poisons of the mind) and get up off the mat lighter and more prepared for that final stage — death — because whatever we don’t resolve, we take forward with us into the next cycle.”
#IAMNOTSOMESICKABOMINATION
When I was a little boy I wanted to play with the girls, not the boys. I preferred playing house to cars and kickball. In elementary school when we lined up to choose teams for basketball I was always picked last. My baseball coach screamed at me for closing my eyes when the ball came at me. I bit my fingernails so badly that when the other boys through me the ball, during passing drills at basketball practice, my fingers bled. Many days just the knowing that basketball practice was looming made me so anxious that I’d get sick and end up in the nurse’s office – and with any luck, sent home.
Vastu-samye – Do You See What I See??
Jai India! Birdsong brings relief.....
Birdsong by Rumi
Birdsong brings relief
to my longing
I'm just as ecstatic as they are,
but with nothing to say!
Please universal soul, practice
some song or something through me!
I’ve never really been able to “get into” poetry. I’ve tried. Many times, and with various motivations ranging from thinking that I “should” like it to hoping that I might feel something. And there have been a few occasions where it hit home. Like the time our dear friend Becky wrote a heartfelt poem and read it at our wedding. That was a special moment.
