Training Experience & Curriculum

The format of the training is 9 weekends together plus you’ll have solo time on your mat and in group classes to synthesize the learning - from the most tangible aspects (like where exactly are you supposed to place your feet in Tadasana??) to the mystical wonders & practices like chakras and yogic breathing.

There’s also a powerful focus on your personal development weaved throughout the experience that will give you inspiration and clarity of what it means to show up fully and confidently in your own life as a leader and teacher. We dive into the big life questions and use the framework of yoga to explore the answers & face the obstacles that sometimes appear on our paths that can prevent us from living our best life. From mentorship, to opportunities to assist in Flow's classes, to meaningful relationships and a deep dive into the full spectrum of yoga from its origins in India to its evolution into our modern urban lives- you’ll graduate from Flow’s program fully prepared & supported. And it doesn’t end there! Upon graduation you will be invited to assist in our public classes, lead community classes and we’ll help you find a path to take your teaching into the world! .

We use the vinyasa flow method with a strong emphasis on alignment and skillful sequencing as our template for our learning. We will explore and integrate:

  • Physiological, psychological and spiritual aspects of asana (the poses), pranayama (the breath), meditation; applied anatomy and physiology of the physical body and the subtle & symbolic energy body including chakras & koshas.

  • History and philosophy of yoga through study of ancient yoga texts plus an exploration of modern day yoga including current important issues like cultural appropriation, trauma informed yoga, yoga & diversity and the future of yoga in the West.

  • Intensives including Mindfulness Meditation, Ayurveda, Pranayama, Ethics, Restorative, Yoga Nidra, Pre-Natal, Principles of Practice, Demonstration, Observation, Teaching, Assists, Study Groups and the Business of Yoga.

We’re proud of this training. Fifteen years in the making we’ve learned a lot about what it takes to facilitate a powerful 200 hour program. While many of your classmates will be from the DMV area we often have out of town guests join us. In the past few years we’ve welcomed trainees from as far away as Atlanta, Texas, Italy, England, Germany and Finland! Our training is also part of a program that offers tuition reimbursement for US Military spouses. Our alumni can be found teaching at Flow, studios spanning the globe, working at spas, gyms, corporations, prisons, shelters, non-profit organizations, leading their own training programs and five have even opened successful studios (Nashville, Vermont, DC, MD, Finland)!

Highlights

Our curriculum is registered through the Yoga Alliance and exceeds their standards providing you with the most comprehensive and hands on training we know. We encourage you to visit their site and read our reviews!

  • Unlike many training programs, at Flow, the entire curriculum is presented by Flow's Senior Teaching Team. The Fall Training is led by Flow’s Founder, Debra Mishalove and Senior Teacher Catherine Zack. Both are 500 - hour level senior teachers with years of experience successfully teaching studio classes, private & corporate yoga & meditation. While we will occasionally include special guest to lead electives (for example Flow’s Sam Breschi leads our modules on Anatomy) we believe at the core of an excellent program is the ability to develop a personal relationship with your teachers who know your name, your practice, see you on a regular basis and care about your development and progress on the teaching path.

  • Flow’s is recognized near and far for it excellent teaching team. When you take our training program you’ll have access to all of our classes and upon graduation you’ll have the option to observe and assist them. This means for example if you fall in love with restorative & gentle yoga - you can be matched to assist PIa, Angela or Catherine and get the behind the scenes perspective and experience of teaching in a public class setting. Or if you’re interested in teaching alignment based classes - you may want to assist Caroline or Leah. Because we have a full spectrum of classes from power to yin, you’ll have many options to choose from.

  • The training curriculum builds intelligently week by week The curriculum has developed over fifteen years so that your investment is respected and honored. This means you’ll experience an offering filled with heart, soul and professional integrity crafted so you’ll graduate prepared and ready to teach.

  • We view graduation from our teacher training as a new beginning and we will continue to foster your development even after the program ends. All graduates have the option to mentor with our teachers and teach our weekly community class. We also have continuing education and often have the opportunity to connect you with teaching opportunities.

  • We offer a flexible training schedule, which is perfect for someone with an unpredictable calendar and incorporate make up opportunities for missed content to ensure you receive all of the content you need to graduate. Plus once you are enrolled in our training, you are able to drop into any module of a future training - either to make up content or get a refresh. We love it when our grads drop in!

  • While many trainings are structured around memorizing and teaching from specific scripts, our emphasis (and our passion!) is to give you the tools and the confidence to develop classes that truly serve the audience you feel most connected with. You get to choose! Some of you may want to focus on learning to teach an advanced & sweaty perfectly sequenced power class and some of you may want to create gentle restorative classes or somewhere in between. We’ll help you discover your path and support you along the way.

  • While we recommend at least a year of practice and a deep desire to bring more yoga into your life - there are no ability or pose requirements. Touching your toes and crow pose are wonderful but our yoga is inclusive and welcomes every body, every ability and that is what we hope to share through our training and through the teachers we graduate.

Teacher Training Commonly Asked Questions

Any advice on knowing when the right time is to take a training?

Making the commitment to bring yoga more fully into your life not easy. The work for those willing to do it is challenging, both physically and spiritually and it takes up a lot of dedicated time. If you are feeling ready , we invite you to step into this journey with us - and in return we will offer you the steadiest of frameworks to support you fully along this path.

I don’t know if my practice is good enough to take a training - I've only been practicing a few years! I can't do a headstand/wheel pose/etc.

While we do recommend at least 2 years of yoga practice before diving into teacher training, there are no specific yoga poses you have to worry about being able to do perfectly - that's not what this is about! In fact, we spend our first several weekends together breaking down the essential yoga poses & figuring out how all levels can access them.

I know I will have to miss a few days of training for my sister's wedding/work/etc... how can I make up the work?

No problem - most people miss at least some portion of the training - from an unexpected few hours when a headache or cold hits you, to one or two full weekends you know ahead of time you already can't make. We'll support your makeup work plan and give you lots of ideas about how to make up the hours & content.

I'm not sure I want to teach yoga - does that mean Flow's teacher training isn't right for me?

Some people know for certain they do or don't want to teach... and many who think they absolutely don't want to teach but are looking to deepen their own practice actually end up changing their minds (I was one of them!). No matter what you feel right now, Flow's teacher training will create a deep exploration of your own yoga practice and give you the tools to teach or simply share yoga with friends, family, and your community. Whether or not you ever officially teach yoga, Flow's teacher training invites you to find your voice and empowers you to be a leader in your life.

Want to talk to others who have taken the training? We are proud of the celebrated reputation of our training and invite you hear directly from our graduates to give you an insider's view on their experiences.  Let us know and we will put you in touch!

“ I really believe that fate is what brought me to Flow. Pursuing YTT was something that I had wanted to do for a long time. But I had so much self-doubt and feelings of not being a good enough yogi to be a teacher and not being worthy of taking the seat of the teacher. I had reached a point in my life where I felt very stuck, unhappy, unsatisfied and alone. I needed to get away from Atlanta and I needed to change my life. Which I did, with a simple Google search. I don’t remember the exact words that I searched but they were pretty much: “Flow” “Community” “Service” “Empower” “Nourish” “Uplift” and, of course, “Yoga.” Flow Yoga Center was the first thing to pop up. I clicked on it and in my heart I just felt a resounding, “Yes!” I knew that there would be lots of details to work out - money, travel, lodging, time off of work, etc - but I just told myself that it would all work out if I just took the leap. So I did! I registered for the 200 Hour YTT and it was the best decision that I’ve ever made.. Flow didn’t just change me, but expanded my life and lifted me up in ways that I never thought were possible.”

Teacher Training Graduate Feedback

Flow’s 200-hour teacher training was a transformative experience — a friendly environment where I was supported, challenged, and encouraged to explore and find my own voice. I immersed myself in all the program had to offer and emerged with a well-rounded foundation for my ongoing yogic education that has sparked a lifelong passion for study, practice, and teaching. I am so grateful!
— Caroline Weaver, Flow Teacher
One of my favorite elements of the Flow’s teacher training program is the variety of experiences it offer prospective teachers. From Ashtanga to Jivamukti, classical Hatha Yoga to the revolutionary Prana Flow, students have the opportunity to taste various styles and then incorporate these principles into a unique and evolutionary approach to their own study of yoga. This all culminates in an ignited expression of teaching that is based on continual learning - it doesn’t get better than that.
— Greg Marzullo, Flow Teacher, Author
I spent a lot of time researching where to take yoga teacher training and am above and beyond happy and satisfied with Flow’s program. The studio itself is warm and welcoming. The teachers that run the program are knowledgeable, experienced and supportive. It’s the most non-judgemental, fun and accepting environment; no matter your yoga skill level or experience. The best part was that we touched on so many types and styles of yoga and there was a perfect balance between physical practice, philosophy, spirituality, anatomy and more. The teachers and training group were always available for questions and extra help. Flow Yoga Center’s YTT was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and it truly changed my life! I left the training well-rounded, confident and ready to conquer the world!
— Arlet Koseian, extendYoga owner/founder
Teacher training at Flow was truly transformational - it transformed not just my yoga study but the direction of my life! The training is completely comprehensive, covering everything from yoga philosophy to flowing vinyasa, sequencing to sanskrit, anatomy to assisting. The guest teachers are full of knowledge and experience, giving the training a rich fullness and providing each trainee with a rare and unique experience. It prepared me to be the teacher and leader that I am today and i am eternally grateful to Debra and all the teachers at Flow.
— Carissa Ciuca, Breathing Room Owner/Director
“My first yoga teacher training was at Flow and was such an inspiring experience. I loved the multitude of teachers and modalities we explored and the focus of turning to your own practice to teach from. It is still my favorite teacher training experience and very much set the ground for teacher I’ve become over the past nine years.”
— Mary Beth LaRue, LA-Based Yoga Teacher, Life Design Coach, & Writer
This experience CHANGED MY LIFE. Not only did it deepen my yoga practice, but it taught me patience with myself and others, to look at people in a different way, and compassion on a whole new level. The teachers are PHENOMENAL and you will love every second. I didn’t want it to end!
— Sandy Johnson Sisk
As I sit here finishing up my assignments, i have to pause and recommend this amazing training I just went through. In my opinion, no other studio in the dmv area even comes close to what Flow Yoga Center has to offer (and trust me i’ve made my rounds). Now imagine being trained by flows best teachers. Every guest teacher that comes in is like the mvp of the workshop they are teaching.
Even after the training, as I deepen my own practice, and start to teach, I feel so much support from my teachers Brittanie , Cory, and Debra Perlson. They have so many students who admire them, but they always make time to answer my millions of questions and ask how I am doing. Whether you want to teach, or just learn more about yoga, I cannot recommend this enough. I loved every single hour of it, it changed my world, and I just wish I could do it all over again.
— Stephanie Zabenah
Just taking a moment to encourage any of my yogi friends (and friends of friends, please share!) to consider Flow’s teacher training program this fall. As many of you know, I completed it this June after years of contemplation (and a bit of fear) and can attest to it being one of the best programs out there. Yes, it is 200 hours. Yes, it is challenging, intense, and demanding, both physically and emotionally. But it is without a doubt one of the best and most transformative experiences of my life and has brought me so many new experiences and dear friends, and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Debra Perlson Mishalove, Brittanie DeChino, Cory Bryant, and Catherine Zack are among the most gifted, supportive, and inspiring teachers I have ever had and truly teach all eight limbs of yoga by example every day. I am more than happy to answer any questions about my experience—please don’t hesitate to send me a message.
