Twists
Twisting asanas have a sponge-like affect on our internal organs, gently squeezing out stagnant toxins and soaking up fresh fluids. Digestive, adrenal, and other body functions improve and core muscles are strengthened. A regular twisting practice can enhance flexibility of both body and mind.
Although the neck is the most mobile part of the spine, leading these poses with your head can result in improper positioning. Twists invite us to work from our pelvis upward, stimulating the manipura (belly) chakra, home of power and often thought of as the midpoint between heaven and earth. The chakras below manipura are linked with our more instinctual energies, while those above are associated with loftier mind functions. As we twist gently upward from manipura, through the mid-spine (closest to our hearts), and finally the neck and head, our more instinctual energies lead our typically dominant intellect. This re-balancing encourages us towards increased suppleness of movement and thought.
Please join us at Flow as we celebrate our focus of the month, twists. Throughout our classes, teachers will guide us through seated and standing twisting asanas appropriate for every level of practice.
